I discovered the wonderful results of using a loofah brush two years ago when a naturopath suggested I use one as part of an overall health treatment I was undergoing at the time. It was the best part of the whole experience [does anyone enjoy taking herbal remedies?].

My naturopath advised I start at the feet and draw the brush upward, one body part at a time, toward my heart. This helps circulation and inevitably, the heart. It also helps relax the body and ease itchiness caused by possible intolerance to commercial cosmetics.

I did exactly what she told me to, then I took the whole show into the shower, added soap and water, and made a few discoveries of my own.

Discovery #1. Tinea. I have suffered from this all my life. Brushing my toes, ensuring the bristles get in between and underneath [that was hard to do, I am very ticklish!] at least three times per week, prevents re-occurrence of tinea.

Discovery #2. Firm brushing in a circular movement on the legs [and probably elsewhere, but I only do it on my legs] restricts hair regrowth and acts as a “polisher”. This is especially effective on the lower legs

Discovery #3. Painful veins. I don’t have varicose veins, yet, but I do get mild pain in areas that are generally prone to veins. If and when I do get them, I believe it will be in these spots [outside of knees]. When these areas start to hurt, I pay extra attention to brushing or loofahing and this eases the pain. When I first started doing this, the pain was shifting from mild to moderate and heading into the “time to get my veins checked” region. If you already have vein problems, of course, you need to be under the care of a health professional, but if you haven’t, I believe that brushing as described will help prevent/slow down vein growth. It definitely helps with the pain.

Discovery #4. Brushing with a loofah brush is like a mini-massage. I play sport. I am middle-aged. Aches and pains are to be expected. I can’t afford physio after every game. I find that regular body-brushing helps keep the aches to a minimum and speeds up recovery when there is an injury. This also aids with all the other niggling muscle and joint pains.

Discovery #5. It feels really good and leaves your skin tingling and squeaky clean.

Two warnings: If you have any sort of wound or rash on your skin, do not loofah. If you skin is fragile then either ensure you use gentle brush strokes or, again, do not loofah.

Otherwise, go for it. Get a loofah brush and experience the improvement in well-being for yourself.
